DirtyGlassEye has added a photo to the pool:
Closer to the south end of the Arashiyama trail that everyone (including me) took, there's a smaller area that is referred to by many online as "a lesser known spot". Considering that nearly every website concerning Kyoto was saying this place is an underrealized hidden gem, I was very skeptical that this place would be overrun with other foreigners. To my surprise, for once they were right. I guess I overestimate how many people take tips online for this.
At the foot of the forested mountains is the Gio-ji moss gardens (some say Temple, but it doesn't really look like one). With a charged admission, you enter a small roundabout path that leads around the patches of moss and to the hut-no sorry, temple, in the back, with a statue of Dainichi Nyorai, the Buddha of Light. The temple itself was named after a dancer who became a priestess after a falling out with a powerful clan leader.
There weren't a whole lot of compositions here, but I knew this one existed cause this angle is what everyone shoots here. The shadows made by the morning light were a bit excessive but I wasn't about to wait a couple of hours (places to be), so I rolled with it. I was a little confused as to what was the really the subject here, the "temple" or the moss itself, and that didn't become any more or less clear after tampering with the light and contrast some more. Maybe leave up to interpretation. In a normal setting, what are your eyes drawn to in this image?
