"Battleship Island", Japan[link7]

"Battleship Island", Japan

Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (meaning "Battleship Island" in Japanese), is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of Nagasaki in Japan. Originally a coal mining facility, it was developed by the Mitsubishi Corporation in the late 19th century due to the discovery of coal reserves beneath the seabed. The island's population peaked in the 1950s, with over 5,000 residents living in high-rise apartment buildings, making it one of the most densely populated places on Earth.

However, with the decline of coal mining and the shift towards petroleum as Japan's primary energy source, Hashima Island was abandoned in 1974, leading to its rapid deterioration. Over the years, it gained notoriety for its eerie, abandoned buildings and was even featured in the James Bond film "Skyfall" as the villain's lair.

In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve Hashima Island as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its historical significance as a symbol of Japan's industrialization and modernization. Today, visitors can take guided tours to explore the island's abandoned buildings and learn about its fascinating history, though access to certain areas may be restricted due to safety concerns.
