Miyajima, officially called Itsukushima, is an island in the Seto Inland Sea near Hiroshima. It has long been considered a sacred place, and building on the island traditionally followed strict rules so that structures would blend into the landscape rather than dominate it.

At the centre stands Itsukushima Shrine, a Shinto shrine dating back to the 6th century. It is built on stilts over the water and is best known for its vermilion torii gate, which marks the approach from the sea. At high tide, the gate seems to float; at low tide, you can walk across the exposed seabed to reach it.

Miyajima is also home to several Buddhist temples, including Daishō-in. In 1996, Itsukushima Shrine and its surrounding landscape were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2023, the island was one of the locations for the G7 Hiroshima Summit.
