Dall’alto, Dogo Onsen appare senza il fascino teatrale della notte. La luce del giorno mostra ogni cosa: il legno scuro della struttura, gli edifici intorno, le strade ordinate, le colline che chiudono la città.

Eppure il luogo conserva una presenza imponente. Il Dogo Onsen Honkan, famoso per la sua storia antichissima, non sembra separato da Matsuyama. È ancora dentro la vita quotidiana del quartiere, tra alberghi, negozi, automobili e persone che attraversano la strada.

Matsuyama non è il centro del turismo che si può immaginare pensando alle grandi metropoli giapponesi. Chi arriva qui, spesso, sa già cosa sta cercando. Un’esperienza più pura, meno costruita. Un luogo importante, ma ancora vivibile.

上から見る道後温泉には、夜のような演出された美しさはない。昼の光は、建物の木の色も、周囲のホテルも、整った道路も、町を囲む山も、そのまま見せている。

それでも、道後温泉本館の存在感は大きい。長い入浴の歴史で知られるこの建物は、松山の町から切り離されていない。ホテルや店、車、人の往来の中に、今も自然に収まっている。

松山は、大都市のような観光の中心ではない。ここを訪れる人は、自分が何を求めているのかをよく知っている。静かで、純粋で、あまり作られていない時間。
特別な場所でありながら、まだ暮らしの中にある。

From above, Dogo Onsen has none of the theatrical atmosphere it takes on at night. Daylight shows everything clearly: the dark wooden structure, the surrounding buildings, the orderly streets, and the hills enclosing the town.

And yet the place remains imposing. Dogo Onsen Honkan, known for its ancient bathing history, does not feel separated from Matsuyama. It is still part of the neighbourhood’s everyday life, surrounded by hotels, shops, traffic, and people crossing the streets.

Matsuyama is not the kind of tourist centre one might imagine when thinking of Japan’s larger cities. Those who come here usually know what they are looking for: something quieter, more genuine, less constructed. A remarkable place that is still allowed to remain livable.
